Read the full biographyBiography
For over forty years, Martha Eddy has woven together Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies and Body-Mind Centering® into Dynamic Embodiment — a method built on Observe, Support, Optimize Options (OSO) that helps practitioners deepen embodied cognition. She has taught the approach through degree programs at Marymount Manhattan College, Saint Mary’s College of California, and UNC Greensboro, alongside long-standing faculty roles at NYU, Princeton, Columbia, and the Laban Institute, where she has served since 1981.
In 1999, she founded Moving For Life to bring dance-based recovery programming to women with breast cancer; it became an independent nonprofit in 2014 and has since been featured on NPR, CNN, and the NBC Today Show. In 2003 she founded the Center for Kinesthetic Education, bringing self-regulation and movement programming into New York City’s public and independent schools. She is a past president of ISMETA, a 2017 recipient of NDEO’s National Award for Outstanding Leadership in Dance Education, and was honored with the John Mack Arthur Founders Award for her work in cancer recovery.
Beyond the classroom, Martha has guided the Global Water Dances initiative since 2008, coordinating choreographers across more than 200 cities and 60 countries to spotlight water conservation through site-specific performance. She continues to teach, lecture, and consult internationally while maintaining a small private practice.
